Moms contact a lactation consultant after baby arrives for various reasons:

·       Difficulty or painful latching

·       Concerns about infant weight gain and/or milk supply

·       Suspected tongue or lip tie

·       Multiples

·       Prematurity

·       Significant medical history

·       Breast refusal

·      For reassurance all is going well!

The initial consult will include: in-depth health history for mom and birth/feeding history for baby, breast/nipple exam, infant oral exam, observation/assessment of a feeding or breast pumping session with interventions as needed, coordination of care with mom’s obstetrician and/or baby’s pediatrician.

Telehealth

Telehealth has grown in popularity and has been utilized frequently in the last year. Many things can be accomplished during a telehealth visit. During on online visit we will discuss feeding topics, observe a feed or pumping session and assess the breasts/nipples as necessary. We will also develop an individualized plan.

There are some things that are better accomplished in-home. Many times during a telehealth visit we can determine if follow-up visits can remain telehealth or if an in-home would be best.

These visits are for established clients with an ongoing need for support. Although one visit can get a lot accomplished, some issues require further care. These visits are also for new topics as they arise such as: returning to work, starting solid feeds, pumping, and weaning.
